Plaid green squares and gaming issues

Today, I started up my Asus laptop, and lo and behold there are green squares everywhere!

To make matters worse, none of my games are working anymore, right when I wanted to start a weekend-long TF2 gaming session.
To clarify: when I say they don't work, I mean to say that they are incredibly slow. I tested World of Goo, and while the loading screens work fine, as soon as I get to the menu, all I see is a black screen with intro music. If I wait long enough (10 seconds), the picture changes, but the game has worked perfectly so far. As for TF2, All my Valve games load up, but when they are about to show the menu, they shut down.
So, I've scoured the internet and can't find the first mention of this or my games anomoly. I really wouldn't mind it so much if my games only worked.

What I've tried so far:
Uninstalling and reinstalling my ATI drivers. When uninstalled, there are no green boxes.
Updated the drivers. Doesn't do anything, and since I have the x1700, there is no point as ATI isn't cover the x1000s anymore.
Reinstalled Directx. Nothing.
Gone to my original drivers that came with the laptop. Doesn't remove the green, and the game problem is still there.
I'm convinced it's not a driver problem, but I'm not sure exactly what. I haven't done anything out of the ordinary graphics wise, so this problem coming out of the blue like this is worrying.

Thanks in advance for everyones help! I'll provide as much info as I can.

Have you tried changing the resolution, color depth, starting in safe mode, etc? Sometimes changing something about the display properties, anything, can make artifacts like that appear or disappear.

Yup and yup. It keeps looking more and more like a driver issue (no squares in safe mode), but a fresh driver installation does nothing. I really don't know what to do - I might as well bite the bullet and do a clean xp install.

If you have tried a fresh driver install and you tried some older drivers it might be your card going out on you
