| Something causing 100% CPU usage and severe lag
No idea what's causing the problem, but my computer has started to jump to 100% CPU usage when running large applications (mostly games, but it extends to others). It basically lags to the point of not being able to play.
I've run disk cleanup, symantec antivirus (clean although it found something a few weeks ago it supposedly quarantined), webroot antivirus/antispyware (clean), malwarebytes antimalware (clean), registryfix, and hijackthis.
Even after all of that, the issue still exists. Any thoughts/suggestions on how to fix this? It's becoming very aggrevating. |

I would open the TaskManager and have a look at the "Processes" tab, which can be sorted by clicking the "CPU" column 'header'. You might need to click it twice to get the highest value at the top, depending on your OS (Operating System).
To open the TaskManager, you can either give the computer the 'three finger salute (press <Ctrl> + <Alt> + <Delete>) then select the "Task Manager" button, or you can right-click the taskbar and choose "Task Manager", or you could even go Start --> Run (or <Windows> + <R>), type in 'taskmgr' and click "OK".
Let us know how you get on......

i know that much (i'm not entirely a computer noob). The processes that are generally running wild during the 100% usage are taskmgr (which makes sense), Dot1XCfg, WDF, Apoint, explorer, Spysweeper, and svchost.
There are a few others that run here and there as well. I've tried closing spysweeper and the associated desktop firewall when using large applications as well, but its to no avail |

If svchost.exe is constantly running at 100% utilization, then it could very well be the underlying culprit. However, there are several potential reasons at to why svchost.exe could overload.
Windows XP, right? If so, the usual suspect is a Windows Update issue. Try applying update 927891 and upgrading WUA if not already done.
Update 927891 for WinXP 32-bit here: Download details: Update for Windows XP (KB927891)
WUA upgrade for WinXP 32-bit here: http://download.windowsupdate.com/wi...gent30-x86.exe
Apply 927891 update, reboot. Apply WUA upgrade, reboot. Hopefully the problem goes away.
If the above does not help, then you could be looking at a myriad of possible culprits ranging from configuration issues to malware. The next step would be to generate a HijackThis log to determine what software resources are actively running on your system.

no dice with the updates. same lag problem.
i would imagine its some sort of malware issue, but i havent been able to find anything when running the scanners. is there something specific i should be looking for? |
