I just got a new power supply to replace an older model that was a 650watt (I paid 35$ for it new so I know it can't really be a 650). The replacement was a Raidmax 500 watt, it had a lot of good feedback from buyers at newegg, and the specs seem good, the 12v has 2 rails, seemed pretty beefy. Cost was around 60$.
I installed it into the case, and after plugging everything in and hitting the power switch the LED for the psu turns on, fans turn on and things start powering up for a split second, and then it goes dead, won't turn back on until I turn off the power supply for a good minute.
Could that my aging system is really drawing over 500 watts and the Raidmax can't keep up? Or is it seem that the Raidmax is doa.
I plugged things back into the older psu and it works fine (as fine as it was--one of the reasons for the replacement is that half the molex connectors in the older psu don't supply any power at all)
Just so you know, Raidmax isn't a good brand by any means. And for that $60, you could have got a MUCH better supply for the money. If you can return it, do so and try to get your money back, so you can get something a bit better.
If you wanna do some research yourself, read this: Power Supply Info
Cost doesn't necessarily mean it was a bad PSU I got my cooler master 500 for cheap and its a decent unit and at times some of the better psu's out there can be had for at or around $40 so don't take that as a factor!!! Even if that old unit wasn't a good 650 watts that system requires nowhere near that much power. A good 350-400 watt psu would have been fine.
As KK said raidmax isn't the best of units and not the best of buys at that price. If you want to test to see if the psu is actually doa unplug everything and run the old paperclip test.

This may be a silly question, but is it possible that it wouldn't start up because it detected there was something wrong with the mobo, or that there weren't enough fans???
I don't remember if I had any of the case fans molex connectors plugged in or not.
Also it's an ATX power supply, and I have installed both the 20 pin and the 4 pin connector to the motherboard (ep-8rda3i), but has those oddly shaped power connectors that go to nothing currently installed.
Just to update, I tried the Raidmax with just the 20-pin connected to the mobo and it works fine without the 4-pin.
Odd.
I've been on the other end of that problem before, where the mobo will not power up without the 4-pin and 20-pin both connected. I'm pretty sure in my manual it says to use both power connectors... oh well, it seems to be working nice and stable with all components drawing from it--so far.
