I have a brother mfc-9440cn printer/fax/scanner machine. It is saying there is a rear paper jam, but there is none. We have tried unplugging, restarting the machine, etc. Any sugestions?

Has the machine recently started to jam more often? If so, it could be a worn belt and/or worn fuser drive gear.
Anyway, you might try a forced reset. Check the manual. You usually have to simultaneously push a couple or so buttons on the control panel to force a reset.
