Acer LCD bad aspect and blocky

I have a Lenovo that I periodically connect up to an Acer LCD AL2216W monitor. It used to work find, however now the aspect ratio seems off - it is squashed to about 2/3 size on the left side of the screen, plus the text is unreadable and very blocky.

I can connect the Lenovo up to other monitors without problem and I can connect the Acer up to other computers without a problem.

Is the monitor or the computer at fault?
How can this be fixed?

How can this be fixed?

Download a Linux bootable Live CD and switch to the desired resolution. Does it look messed up still? Blaming the operating system seems like the next logical troubleshooting step.
