CD/DVD Optical Drive Problem

I bought an authorized refurbished Dell with a power dvd two days ago. Your link comes up for technical questions on this cd/dvd rw drive.
I cannot play audio cds.
I cannot install cd software, such as a simple printer.
The "D" drive does not register any name of any inserted cd.
I tried a dvd movie, played fine.
I have never had a computer which did not have TWO drives, one for dvd, one for cd, so if there is something I do not know how to do, please tell me. I am no computer novice, but this is a mystery.
Please help. Thank you.

if you only bought it 2 days ago then i suggest you return it to where you bought it, they should by law offer some sort of guarantee esp if it is an authorized refurb unit,
if you have no joy with that then come back here as there are solutions such as firmware updates, but they can, if not done correctly render your drive completely useless so best to try point of sale first
