hp pavillion dv7 won't turn on at all..

about a month or two back I bought a brand new hp pavillion dv7 laptop. To my unsatisfactory, within a week or so of having it I was already having issues :/ the screen would freeze, it randomly wouldn't turn on, those two being the biggest issues. Usually If it wouldn't turn on I'd leave it unplugged for about a half hour, plug it back in, let it charge and the re-attempt, usually ending in success.

However, now I have a much bigger problem. When I hit the power button the touchpad icons above the keyboard turn on but the computer itself doesn't. The screen doesn't turn on at all. I here a whir upon startup, which whirs for a couple a second then goes silent. I unfortunately never bought warrantee..so If I'm going to send this in to HP for repairs could anyone give me a guestimate of how much it will more then likely cost? If its outrageous I'd rather just buy a new laptop and say to heck with HP..worst investment of my life.

Also, if anyone knows of anything that may help please, I'm all ears and would appreciate (:

    Unhappy Disgruntled with HP

I have had the same problem...
I have already sent my laptop in for repair (took around 4 weeks all up) and now it has happened again!!!

I think this computer design is a real DUD.

I found the following response posted elsewhere - which suggests that is the case:

I have worked on dozens of the HP DV series and can tell you that they are plagued by a common problem. The GPU which is a separate video chip that is ball soldered onto the motherboard has started to warp due to improper cooling design has left you with a dead machine. HP knows about this and even has a 24 month past warranty for 100's of dv series with this problem. The only way to fix it is to either replace the motherboard which you can buy off of ebay for about $150 or inject flux under the chip and heat it to about 220 degrees with a mini torch to re solder the chip.

Guys, didn't know you could still find those. They were all recalled because of the GPU chip problem, a class action lawsuit and many, many, many of us got new (cheaper) LQ115-DX Presario laptops. I gave that to my sister. The lawsuit is over.

    Thanks for the info.

I live in Australia... HP is probably offloading faulty crappy HP laptops over here, now that they've recalled them in the USA.
