Out of the blue today my CD Drive hasn't been recognized by the computer. It's been saying there is no CD drive so I went to see if it was in hardware and it has the yellow triangle with the exclamation mark in it. I've tried to fix it by checking for solutions online, whatever it tells me to do to try to fix it, but nothing works. Any suggestions? I know my way around a computer ok but I'm not an expert so forgive me if I'm a bit slow with direction.

When you're in device manager, right click on the cd drive and uninstall it. Then reboot your computer. The drive should automatically be recognized and reinstalled. Hopefully this will resolve your problem.

Well, I tried it and it said it was installing it, then said the attempt failed and said to contact device manager or something along those lines to get it installed.

Have you changed anything about your PC lately? Hardware, software, anything? In the device manager is it still showing the exclamation mark by the cd drive? Also, what does it say under device manager for your cd drive? (manufacturer/model number)

ok well a few days ago i removed temp files, cookies, cache, etc. i defraged the computer, did a disk cleanup and removed a couple programs that I didn't need because this laptop doesn't just have the cd drive problem, it has a internet explorer problems and freezing problems, ugh, its a nightmare, but my main problem is the cd drive. I didn't notice the cd drive malfunction until today but who knows when it happened. Yes, the exclamation mark is still there. It says "HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GSA-T20F ATA Device" and that's it. The error says that followed by failed and says "Device driver software was not successfully installed. Please consult with your manufacturer for assistance getting this device installed."

I tried a system restore going back to the 11th of this month but obviously it did nothing. I don't know what is wrong with this computer but there are so many things wrong with it. Like internet explorer, after using it for a while these little error boxes will pop up saying error, not exactly sure what the words were, but then it is followed by a differnet number each time, like "error: 234" and stuff like that. I can't seem to fix this stupid thing.

Try the following steps from Microsoft's Technet forums. Sounds like you're having the same problem that others are. Quote:
Hi,
I suggest trying the following steps to troubleshoot the issue.
Step 1 If you have any third-party CD/DVD-burning software such as Naro or Roxio installed, please temporarily remove them from "Control Panel"-> "Programs and Features".
Step 2 Delete Filter Drivers
======================
1. Click Start, type regedit and press ENTER.
2. Navigate to the following key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
3. Right click the {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} entry, choose "Export", select Desktop in the Save in box and type backup in File Name. Click Save.
Please Note: The backup file is on the Desktop and named backup.reg. We can simply restore the registry by double-clicking the backup.reg file.
4. Highlight this key ({4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}), on the right pane, and then check if Upperfilters and Lowerfilters value are present. If so, please right click on the values and select "Delete" to remove them.
5. Restart the computer
Step 3 Reinstall the DVDROM
======================
1. Click Start, type devmgmt.msc and press Enter.
2. Expand DVD/CD-ROM drives.
3. Right-click the DVDROM and click Uninstall.
4. Restart the computer.
If the issue persists, to get the issue resolved in a timely manner, I recommend contacting your computer manufacturer for more information.
Hope it helps.
