i just read this post and realized that i didnt put much detail into it. i use firefox, windows xp SP 2, and i have Webroot Spy Sweeper, and AviraAntivirus. whenever i oped up firefox it just has an untitled tab, and i tried accesing the internet through IE, and it basically did the same. I downloaded Malawarebytes through a memory stick onto my computer and scanned, and even though it found alot of crap on my computer, it didnt fix the problem.

    again, i need someone's help.

i lean toward ruling out simple things 1st......

you're connected via a router? reboot it.

reboot your pooter too if you've not aleady done so.

for spyware/malware. turn off system restore on all drives - run hijack this - and check the log. run spybot and maybe a trend micro online scan.

Hi, and WELCOME TO TECHIMO - from the Folding@Home Team (#111)...!

Personally, I would do some other testing/troubleshooting before you start doing the steps Doddsy has suggested.

Do you have a valid IP address...? (Start --> Run --> 'cmd' [Enter] --> 'ipconfig' [Enter]. Basically, as long as the IP address listed doesn't start with 169 you should be okay.)

Are you able to PING the router/gateway...? (From the above, 'ping ' and enter the IP address listed as being the default gateway [Enter].)

Are you able to PING a website...? Google is one you could test with. (Still using the Command Line Interface, 'ping Google' [Enter])

If you can answer yes to the first two, but can't get the third step, then it sounds like the internet is down...

The only other question I have for you at the moment would be to ask whether there any other machines on your network, and can these access the internet...?

Let us know how you get on, and we can see how else we can help you...
I've seen the light... It was green, flashy and attached to a Network Interface Card...
Whenever someone says "You can't miss it", I invariably do...

    Alternatives

You could try uninstalling Avira and then installing another security software on your PC; try bitdefender, it even has a free edition; that's what I'm using and I think it will do the trick. After that, you should try out several antivirus programs and then decide to a security suite.let me know how it goes

After Nude Led Man's trouble shooting, if you don't have positive results, run your virus scan stuff in safe mode. Some viruses, malware, etc. hide in regular operations and only show up in scans when in safe mode.
