gtx 260 dead? or motherboard slot?

here is my comp spec that I upgraded :

msi n260gtx-t20896-ocv3
phenom II x2 550
gigabyte GA-MA770T-UD3P
coolmax cu-700b 700w
Elpida 4x1gb ddr3

i also have a lite-on cd rw and sata 400gb hard drive that i am sure it has no problem since was using them before.

ok here is my story.
first of all, I didn't not buy that 700w power supply. and I use my old coolmax 450w instead. however, i got everything, built and it works perfectly fine at that time. I even installed window xp and drivers with the 450w.

after that, I was going to finish up everything and plug in all the usb stuff.
then it doesn't work.

I wasn't able to power it up. So i think that is because of the lack of power from the power supply. so I bought the 700w from newegg.

now i got the power supply, fortunately, i am able to power it up every time. all the fans are moving. But there is nothing showing on my monitor.
I also noticed that there is a sticky smell coming out from the video card. and the fan of the video card were kind of unstable, its like running fast->low->fast->low~~ P.S. i did plug in all the 6pin connectors.

so i stopped it... and now I am not sure what is the problem with it....
is it the motherboard pci-e slot problem? or the video card problem??
HELP PLZ >.<

Hi and welcome.

Sounds like it is the gpu that is having problems.... Although you are not doing yourself any favours buying those horrible 'coolmax' PSU's. Mabye the 450W died and took something else with it I.E. the gpu....

Is there another computer you can use to test the card? Or another card to test in that computer?

Also would suggest if possible to return that 700W and buy a decent quality PSU.

are you serious?
the ocz that you suggested have only 36amp on the +12 rails. I don't think its good enough to support my gtx 260 since it recommend to have 40-50 amp. tthe 450w didn't die too because I tested it with my p4 pc any perfectly fine.
If i have another computer to test the gtx or other card to test the mb, then i wouldn't need to ask on the forum.....

Well I find that responce rather insulting.....

If you come looking for help, then the least you can give us is curtesy. (not to mention all the information we need).

As to your question.... Yes, I am serious!

Manufacturer's always state more than is needed to be safe (especially with all those underpowered PSU's around.... Yours included).

Just to let you know im running two 260's on a 650W PSU which has a max of 45AMPS from the +12v rails. I can game happily, fold for days on end no problems.... Why you ask..... Its because I have a decent PSU.

That OCZ will happily run that card..... Good day to you.

just want to get a decent solution for my new pc rather then replacing it.......
it is really annoying to send things back and wait another 10 days for the replacing...

any other ideas to fix it?.........

Guy stop the attitude! I realize you are upset and rightly so but, it ain't our fault. Now how can we tell you what is wrong with the info we have? Computer repair is mostly intelligent guessing then testing the guess. So with this in mind the most likely culprits of your problem are GPU, MB, or the PSU. Without expensive testing equipment you are stuck with the old tried and true method of changing out parts. Sorry if this is an inconvenience but without the proper testing equipment it's the only way. I own and use the 260 and can tell you your perceived requirements are a tad high. I'm running like a champ on a 500 watt Enermax. Coolmax does not have a good rep in tech circles plain and simple. A lower powered, higher quality, PSU will often out perform a higher powered, lower quality, PSU! I can't say for sure if it's your GPU, MB, or PSU with out testing (changing out) them but, I do agree with everything Aaron said.

Buying good parts for a PC then throwing in a crappy PS (read newegg reviews on their products..) is like buying a Saleen and throwing $50 tires on it - everything rides on both, can you really afford to skimp on it?

Aaron's advice has to have some weight to it since he's not the one posting with a problem

Bite the bullet now and get rid of your Coolmax - be without a PS for 10 days, or deal with it and be without a computer for x days. Your choice!
