| Help with stupid computer
I have a PC that had started random lockups..
P3, 128 meg ram. Win98SE
The other night a ran a test on the memory for a few hours, no problem there.
So I checked the HDD, came back all clear... But I went ahead and repartitioned it to 1 partition, (was 3),formatted and reinstalled 98se and was getting the drivers all setup. Then it starts locking up again.
Locks up during post, even locked up on a boot disk.
Does it sound like a Power supply prob?..
help....before I throw this thing against the wall |

Sounds like maybe a heat problem. What kind of CPU,heatsink and fan, video card, that type of thing do you have?

If you've definitely ruled out the RAM and heat issues, it could certainly be a PSU problem.
Another possibility...you might try to install/reinstall your mobo's drivers. |

I just had a wire fall out of a HDD power connector, so I fixed that and also reseated my dimms. I had suffered random reboots mid install (Linux). A shot in the dark, fer sure, but you never know. |

forgot to mention...
Also does random reboots... just tried it this morning, halfway through scandisk (dos) it rebooted.
Just looked at the PSU... 200 watter, but on the side panel it says a max of 185 watts... And this thing came stock for a 550 Athlon...sheesh... |

Of course try the PSU, my very first thought. Then you said 200watt. I know, 200 watts is plenty for your computer, but that tells me the supply is perhaps a little old, or cheap.
Good on the ram test. Try reseating your cpu though, and the video, for that matter take everything apart and put it back together, could be any connection causing trouble, even dust on the mobo.

I had something similar to this when I was using a D-Link DE528 Ethernet card... Pulled it out and replaced it with a 3Com and it's been fine since... Just a thought....
