12 volt Poewr supply

HI.
How do you maintain a constant 12 Volt DC supply, which has a heavy draw load of 5 volts DC on start up.

Do I use a 12 volt Buck Boost.

A 12 volt Rectfier.

A 12 Volt Capacitor.

A 24 Volt to 12 volt Reducer.

Or is there something else.

I need something That will give me extra, make up voltage, when required.

Thanks.
Geoff.

Could use more details. Is this a stand alone supply for something or a computer supply. If this is on a computer then there are other voltages to worry about too. If it drops to 5 volts on startup then it just isn't big enough or it is damaged. In a pinch if you really gotta make this work put a small rechargable 12 volt battery on the output. Then when the load trys to draws it down the battery will keep it up. From the parts you listed only a capacitor would be close to the appropriate part but they are only for very short term smoothing of power. Maybe a huge bank of capacitors but that would be crazy for no reason.

A capacitor only holds the amount of voltage going into it while the power is on. If the voltage starts at 12v then drops down to 5v then back up to 12v, then the capacitor will do the same thing.
If its not for a computer, then a low voltage transformer would help. Say using 24v to 12v. Gotta be careful and know which wires to use though. If you connect the power to the wrong wires you could wind up with 24v going up to 48v.
Where would you get 24v DC from?
