Toshiba/Hitachi 2.5 HDD pin issue

I have removed a Toshiba 2.5 IDE HDD from a Toshiba Satellite portable dektop. The pin arrangement is not the usual straight out 44 pin arrangement. It is a 22 'slot' with a contact surface on each side of the female portion (on drive) that mates by pressing the drive down onto the male pins or plates that have the mating contact on each side.

I need to be able to connect this drive to a USB 2.0 in order to recover data. Also, I will want to install a larger capacity drive when I rebuild the Toshiba.

Anyone know where I can get an adapter?

Your HDD is either sitting in a cradle, or that adapter is just plugged into the 40 pins. I can't really tell which from your two photos though. From the foil, it looks like it's probably in a cradle.

I'm looking for a link to an example but my google skillz are lacking this afternoon. lol

Oh yeah, Welcome to TechIMO.

Second the welcome to TIMO, D-D,

Yup, I second JLK's opinion too. Lots of laptops use adapters as the tiny pins on the 2.5" PATA or smaller drives can be easily damaged in assembly. The adapter should be removable for use on a replacement drive. Just be careful with it and try to pull it off as straightly as possible. You should be able to find HDD replacement notes for your Satellite on the Toshiba site.

I seriously stared at it for too long and over-thunk this one. Have to turn in my tech credentials and give back my merit badge. I just pulled the adapter off and there were the standard straight pins. You guys both nailed it. I owe you both a shrimp dinner...the real kind...out of North Florida waters...not some pond in Thailand. Thanks, thanks, thanks.

I'll meet you in the big marina in Destin tomorrow night for dinner. It's only 5 hours away. lol

Microcenter has a great cheap adapter if you wanna just get the data from the drive, otherwise you may want to get a nice USB enclosure if you want to continue using it as an external drive.

Sorry...I don't do Gulf shrimp, only Mayport. You'll have to come to St Augustine. Come to think of it, I don't do Destin, either. I have my own ocean and it has waves even when there isn't a hurricane!
I'll even throw in a discount at one of my wife's waterfront condos.
I already bought an external case fromshop4tech.com for $10 & change w/shipping. Just powered up and going to plug the USB in and see if there's any data left. I back up everything but there is one critical mailing list that was over-written as undecipherable garbage on the the external HDD. Right after that I couldn't boot off the disc. Tried all the other remedies before pulling the HDD before I lost more data.

More issues with 2.5

Have 2.5 drive in external enclosure. "Device Manager" says it is a Initio MK8025GAS...which is correct...and it is operating properly. Nevertheless, "My Computer" doesn't 'see' the drive. Also, when the external HDD is connected to my laptop, both running XP, everything slows way down or won't run. The power light on the external case keep switching on and off...green to red...more 'off' than 'on'. I have tried every jumper configuration including 'no jumper' to try to get the external HDD to run as a slave.
I'm willing to send it out to have the critical data recovered that was corrupted in the backup.
I'm willing to even eat Gulf shrimp...although I just paid $6.97 a pound for heads-off jumbo local shrimp right off the boat.

I've read you can put a failing HDD into the freezer for a while & it may run long enough to recover data from it. Pretty sure using no jumper is the correct setting for using the USB adapter.

Good luck!

Shrimp dinner offer still stands. Sending HDD out to local data recovery service. I've put 6 man hours into this effort with zip results. That's my limit.
