| won't come out of standby mode
My compaq will not come out of standby mode. I have shut it down and restarted. Nothing. Monitor says 'no signal' and keyboard and mouse will not work. I have disconnected everything (after power down) reconnected, checked usb ports and everything. What else canI try to get it out of standby mode - without the use of the keyboard??? |

Hi, and WELCOME TO TECHIMO - from the Folding@Home Team [#111]...!
It sounds like the GPU (graphics card) has died - hence the reason the monitor is telling you that it is getting no signal and going into 'Standby' mode...
I just posted elsewhere on here for someone else having exactly the same issue... Like I said to them, I'm not the best to recommend which new part/s to get, but I'm sure that others who are <much> better will be here soon. When I get onto one of my computers (rather than my BlackBerry, which I'm using now) I'll try to get one or two of them to have a look...
In the meantime, can you give us some insight as to what the specs of you computer are (especially the MoBo and PSU you're using) so that it gives them some idea of what to suggest.....

Ok. Forget the whole "standby" thing. Turns out, if I actually pay attention, It doesn't start up at all. The fan starts moving but that's it, no start up beeps or any noises of any sort.
To be honest, I have no idea what I have, but I'll tell you what I know. Brand New power supply, new graphics card - EVGA/Nvidia version 09-963-50-1. I got it to support my widescreen monitor. Everything else is stock. I looked on website to see stock parts, so motherboard says - 400MHz, AGP 8x output. Processor is AMD Athlon XP 2.2 GHz. Is there any other I can gie you? I know, I'm a dumb girl, but I gotta learn somehow right? Thanks!!!

Hi,
If it isn't getting to the POST (Power On Self-Test - the bit where it should give you a beep code, where one short beep means ok) then you're prolly looking at something not right with the hardware...
Take everything out except for the CPU (and HSF), 1 x HDD, 1 x stick of RAM, 1 x GPU (Graphics card - unless on MoBo, in which case just use the MoBo GPU), and the PSU...
As it doesn't POST, then the chances are that you would need to be looking at replacing something/s to get it to start...
If you can get it to work with that minimal/minimum spec, then add one item at a time and see how far you can get.
If you have multiple sticks of RAM, then you should prolly test with each stick individually...
I would also ensure that all the cables are fully seated to save any hassle where something has just become loose.... |
