Also consider implementing OpenDNS as part of a larger comprehensive solution:

OpenDNS > Solutions > Overview

Anyway, none of the content filtering you can implement is seriously going to stop anyone determined from accessing whatever content on the Internet. It usually takes a matter of a few minutes to circumvent most content filtering techniques, and the information to do so is readily available with little more than a Google search.

Your better solution is set down with your kid and explain what you feel is morally appropriate content, and how you both can work towards trust on Internet usage. In other words, parenting.

Hi EMM... and welcome! The best advice I can offer is this:

1) you can't keep your child from discovering the world out there.
2) if you keep the computer in a common place (living room) there is less opportunity for mischief
3) monitor the child's activities, but don't be a tyrant. Kids want to do what they are not supposed to do! (nature)
4) keep the channels open... If your child feels he/she can discuss Everything with you without retribution, they are more likely too!
