Is it possible to remove the drive from a Toshiba laptop and slave it to a desktop computer IDE drive to retrieve data from it? The Laptop will not boot into windows completely nor into safe mode. I need to get the data from the drive somehow. Repair option on XP cd wont work either. Lid was slammed shut when laptop was on.... damaged files I suspect. Wont boot but only to logo screen, then hangs.

Not sure yet. Dont have it apart. Never took one apart before to get to the drive. Does the whole back panel have to come off? Will the IDE Ribbon match the laptop drive? 40 pin or something like that... a standard ATA drive ribbon with master and slave connectors.? Thanks |

I have one of these IDE/SATA to USB adapters. It's great for slaving all types of drives. Once you slave the drive you will probably need to take owership of the My Document folder so you can recover the files. I managed to fumble my way through it a few times, but I'm sure someone else can guide you through if needed.

Yes it is from the same thread. I did not realize I could remove the drive and slave it to my desktop to retrieve the data. I will have to find out if I can get one local (radio Shack, Walmart) Still have to get it apart yet. thank you all for your input, I have learned something new again on this site as usual. Will post a reply on the results. |

Thanks | Oh, and BTW, you don't need to take the entire thing apart - the HDD is normally behind one panel that needs a screw or two to be removed... |
