| Boot up problem on a Compaq lappy...
Alright, my friend's got a Compaq Presario 12xx laptop. (unfortunately) Anyhow, here a couple weeks ago it started giving him problems with it's hibernate feature. And now a day or two ago it quit booting up at all. It'll get to the splash screen, and then just reboot. Unfortunately he's about 6 hrs. away from where I'm at, so I had to try and help him over the phone. I got him to delete entries for hibernate from his autoexec.bat file, but that didn't help any. Now it just gets to a point where it says "About to create hibernate file" or something like that... and then it reboots. Got any ideas? |

Had a Compaq 12xx with its share of quirks, but never that problem. Does he have restore disks for the thing, or an OS reinstall possibly? Seems that series came with Win98, and the power management on that OS was sketchy at best. I never did use the hibernate feature.

Most Comcraps have the option of pressing "F10" during boot up to get to the BIOS settings. You might look there to see if there are any hibernation settings.
Can you get in through "Safe Mode"? Might try that as well. |

| Ok, I'll tell him to try that, see what he can find. He knows very little about computers though, and nothing about using a BIOS so I doubt he'll be able to do much there. Quote: |

| Yeah, that's something I told him to try yesterday already. Don't know if he got anywhere with that or not, he hasn't called back yet. |

Ok , here's a little different " Hibernate " problem.
My friends girlfriend has a Compaq ( she was supposed to bring it to me but hasn't yet) and she says after starting it, running for a little while ( undefined amount of time as of yet) it makes a clicking sound and says it is going into " Hibernate" . Off the cuff I'm thinking its getting too hot, a bad fan or something? If she brings it by , I will give more info. She is not even sure of the OS so she is not much help. |
