Red face Hard drive will not Defrag

I have a Western digital Hard Drive # WDC WD 1600JB-00DUA3 160 Gig that will NOT defrag. I've tried numerous different software like, Auslogic and Diskeeper ( as well as Microsoft's ) and the defragmentation stops at various stages ????

The computer runs as fast as it ever has. (built it in 2005 or so )

    AMD Sempron 2.2 GHz Processor
    2 gig Corsair ram
    N Vidia 5200

    Is there any hope ?????

I think I would made an image of the drive on another drive and then run something like (killdisk), in the past I have resurected a few drives that way.
You can't get there from here

The first step is to backup up critical files...
Then run WD's Data Lifeguard Diagnostic for Windows
This will find and fix any bad sectors, which is likely the reason the defrag software is faltering
