XP Desktop Problem

"A friend of mine has just bought a dell computer and has windows XP installed on it...but everytime he turns off his computer or it shuts down, the desktop is erased and so are the files..and there is a message when the computer is turning back on, saying "cannot find a particular file"...do u know what might be the problem here?..im not too sure!
thanks for your time!"

This is what my friend wrote to me... unfortunatley I have never used win XP.... I assume it's a corrupted sector? Good 'ol Dell eh?

Does this happen to all users or just your friend?

What, specifically, are the files that the OS is saying that it cannot find?

Hi Freaky,
Did your friend say why he couldnt contact Dell??
I would suggest since the Comp is new that he contact Dell and talk to them, explaining what is happening. My last comp was a Dell and when I had problems the were pretty fast helping me get everything sorted out. That might have changed tho' I've heard Dells support isnt as good as it used to be.
If he cant get help from Dell, Can you find out the exact message he receives?
