Welcome the forum Weazy7...
The first thing you need to do is post ALL info regarding your problem:
1) Make/model of computer
2) Operating System
3) CD burner make/model
4) Software used to burn
5) Type/brand of media used
Until most of those Q's are answered... no one will be able to offer anything more than a shot in the dark.◄ it is what it is ►

As old as the burner probably is now, I'd venture a guess it's failing. Before calling the CD burner bad, try different blank CDs.
You probably wanna bookmark this page below to help replacing the drive if you need a new one.

But I'd have to agree with JLK, try different CD's, some times its the media that is defective and not compatible with the CD Burner.
But considering the age of the system, as JLK said it could be going bad, or failing.
But you should be able to buy a new one cheap enough (IDE or PATA interface): Newegg.com - Computer Hardware, CD / DVD Burners & Media, CD / DVD Burners, IDE
Mostly Refurbished CD Burners: Geeks.com
But after shipping costs, you'd pay as much as the DVD Burners on Newegg with cheap shipping, like that Lite On for $25 with $2 shipping.
Add in the bonus of being able to burn DVD's besides just CD's. (assuming all you have is a CD Burner right now, but if you have a DVD Burner, then it'd basically be just a replacement, instead of a Replacement/upgrade)
Another one from another site, that would probably cost the same as the Lite On from Newegg: LG GH22NP21 22X IDE DVD Writer Black Internal 22x Super-Multi Drive DVD Burner 8X/6X DVD+RW/-RW 16X DVD+R DL 12X DVD-R DL 2 MB Cache-Best Computer Online Store Houston Buy Discount Prices Texas-Directron.com
I actually use a variation (earlier model) of that last one, and it works fine, of course I'm using a much newer system than yours, but still works fine for IDE DVD Burner.
(Have an LG IDE DVD Burner, and a Pioneer SATA DVD burner in this system, and an LG SATA DVD Burner in my newer system).Intel Core i5 4690K//CM Hyper 212 Evo/2x Akasa Viper R 140mm//EVGA Z87 Stinger//8GB Avexir DDR3 2133MHz//MSI GTX 760 2GB//XFX XTR 550W//Thermaltake Core V21//Win 8.1 64-bit//Seagate ES.3 1TB 128MB Cache 7200RPM, Seagate Barracuda 1TB 64MB Cache 7200RPM
