    M4A785-M 785G R

I built my computer about a year and a half ago, and the heatsink/fan is very loud - it's NOT the tower/case fan.
I would like to get a nice, quiet,, less than 50 bucks fan that will make a hellava difference in the noise. Assume that I do not want a liquid - and also cheaper (35?) than 50 would be great, but honestly I want nice effective cooling.
I usually shop at NewEgg if that helps for making a recommendation.

THANKS, folks! I can't even figure out the right specs for size or whatever... This was my first build and I'm otherwise a n00b...

The question someone is going to ask you is what is the socket type of CPU?

would of been easier to just link the exact items you bought than post the cryptic model/order numbers from newegg.

    You've got a Socket AM3 CPU.

just get a Coolermaster Hyper 212 Evo and call it a day.

those can be had for $35 or less.

decent coolers, not ultra quiet, but run quiet enough and very effective cooling.

Or get an Arctic Cooling Freezer Series cooler, usually cost a bit more, but can be had under $50.

Newegg.com - ARCTIC COOLING ACFZ13-PRO 120mm & 50mm (2 fans) Fluid Dynamic High Performance CPU Cooler for Intel and AMD

Newegg.com - ARCTIC COOLING ACFZ13 92mm High Performance CPU Cooler for Intel and AMD

Newegg.com - COOLER MASTER Hyper 212 EVO RR-212E-20PK-R2 Continuous Direct Contact 120mm Sleeve CPU Cooler Compatible with latest Intel 2011/1366/1155 and AMD FM1/AM3+

Newegg.com - COOLER MASTER Hyper 212 Plus RR-B10-212P-G1 "Heatpipe Direct Contact" Long Life Sleeve 120mm CPU Cooler Compatible Intel Core i5 & Intel Core i7

due to your cases size, the 92mm AC's might be the better option.

the Hyper 212 might fit, but it would be a tight fit.

Keep in mind, that if your case doesn't have a Mobo Tray cut out area on the back, that you may have to remove your entire Motherboard from the case to mount some of these heatsinks.

    Thank you for that...

    Thank you for that!
I had been wondering what the 'mm' size referred to, i.e. was it the surface area of the heat-sink contact... and kinda lost. So I think you clarified it for me. Believe me, I wouldn't have posted all the 'mumbo-jumbo' if I knew the answer to the question asked!

I'm not really sure what kind of case space I have or how to tell, but you've certainly been helpful...

the millimeter size is the Fan Blade diameter.

The 92mm Arctic Cooling cooler will fit in your case, but it also depends on how the motherboard is layed out.

    ASUS - Motherboards- ASUS M4A785-M

Looking at it, it looks relatively clear, though AMD's tend to mount the fans and coolers in odd positions, sometimes facing the fan in an down to up position, instead of front to back position.

What I'm concerned about the cases mounting depth from the CPU Socket to the side panel, some 120mm tower coolers are too tall and won't allow narrower cases to close the panel due to the tower heatpipes from being too tall.

92mm sized Fans, usually mean a shorter cooler, so that AC 92mm one should fit, but not sure which way it orients when mounted, not sure if the fan would be too close to the motherboards Chipset heatsink, or RAM slots.

It should fit, but there's always a chance it might not.

the 120mm fan ones, should fit as well, their not AS tall as some other coolers like Xigmatek's and some of the higher end Coolermasters and such. Usually a larger diameter fan means same or better Air flow rate, but at a lower RPM speed, and thus quieter operation.

Myself I haven't had any coolers smaller than 120mm in probably 3 or 4 years. I did run a couple older Arctic Cooling Freezer Series 92mm coolers for a couple years before that, and they ran whisper quiet as well as slightly better than stock cooling.

My last set up used a Xigmatek 120mm Cooler (really tall one), My current PC setup uses a Corsair H60 Liquid cooler kit instead.

VASTLY Quieter, with the right fans on it, and decent cooling.

    Progress...

Currently the fan is about 9cm across and pretty close to the memory, a couple of pics here: CacheCam! - (yes I know it's messy!)

Does the cooler then just go 'over' the memory?

As for the 'height' so I could close the case side-cover, I have about 12cm or so.

BTW I don't overclock or anything like that, I just need good cooling, next step is just to fill the RAM slots...

Sorry if my questions are pretty n00b, that's the problem obviously.

Well dust that thing out first, that dust can retain the heat in the system, and prevent it from cooling better.

The Heatsink in there doesn't even look like its a stock cooling fan, looks like an aftermarket cooler, not even sure which one it is.

most stock coolers will not be that close to the RAM slots.

almost all the Tower coolers listed here are not going to be over the first RAM slot like that one in your pics, but the fans are going to be really close to it if anything.

if you only have about 12cm from the CPU socket to the side panel, then the 92mm fan cooler would be better.

this is a pic of the inside of my current rig:

Here's one with my older rig with the taller Xigmatek cooler (120mm fan):

Different Mobo/CPU and setup than you have, but you can see how tall some of these 120mm fan coolers can get.
