Laptop displaying vertical lines

Hi everyone,

this is my setup:
sony vaio laptop vgn-nr31z
cpu: intel core 2 duo 1.83GHZ
gpu: geforce 8400m gt
ram: 3 gb ddr2
hdd: 200 gb
OS: vista home premium


during the past days I 've had a problem with my laptop. While booting in all of the bios pages vertical lines appear. After that the system want let me boot as the screen turns black and the"enter password" screen never appears.

I 've tried the startup repair but nothing was done. The startup repair after trying to roll back to previous stable versions several times, then said that no solution could be found.

However, there are some very few times that the laptop will start normally and boot into windows. However, even then after a few moments the screen turns black again and is unresponsive.

I 've tried the anti-virus and mallware stuff too thinking it might have been a virus but I doubt that's what it is.

Finally, when booting into safe mode the problem is not there anymore.

I was thinking that there might be a problem with my gpu but if there is, then why doesn't it appear in safe mode. Also while in safe mode the device manager displays no problems whatsoever.


What should I do guys? I am really needy of the laptop.

It could be the monitor, but you said it doesn't happen in safe mode? Try uninstalling the driver for the video card and reinstalling it. I would try to use Driver Sweeper in safe mode after you uninstall the driver. Guru3D - Driver Sweeper

Did you install any software recently? Hardware installed?
