Win 7 After Startup Slow or No Programs Open

I have a Sony Vaio running Windows 7. Recently, startup goes fine, I see the desktop, but when I try to open Google Chrome, IExplorer or other stuff, nothing happens.

Sometimes if I wait 7-8 minutes i MIGHT get chrome, et.al., to open. Most of the time I have to restart, or shutdown/restart a few times to get anything to open.

Sometimes EVERYTHING is unresponsive and I've had to shut down manually by holding down the start button. This can't be good for the computer, right???

It even takes a good 5-6 minutes for the "network and sharing center" icon to show that my computer has connected to the Internet. I went to ms/windows site and (I thought) got rid of all the programs that auto run at startup.

Could I have eliminated something that SHOULD run at startup?

Also, I recently downloaded Evernote and upgraded my AdAware program.

I've previously noticed that I needn't try to open Chrome or IE until I hear the message telling me that my 'Avast" antivirus program "has been updated."
