DVD RW not working in windows

The drive is seen in the bios and during initial boot, but when windows starts it says that the driver is bad???
I don't have any special driver other than what WIN7 is providing and I'm on my second DVD drive (SATA type) for this PC.
I have uninstalled the driver figuring that it would install on reboot, but NO it still has a problem with the driver.
The PC is a COMPAQ Presario CQ5500F.
Any help is appreciated.

Try to boot from any bootable CD and see if it works . In case the DVD worked then the driver for DVD , meaning the ASPI files are corrupted ... If so , try a restore point to an earlier time .

boot from bootable CD
I haven't tried your suggestion - yet. But, I did copy the cdrom.sys driver from another PC and loaded it to the same location on the PC that is causing the problems and see the same issue - not able to load driver - driver may be corrupted.
I just tried to use a bootable CD and it worked with out a hitch.
What is the steps to do a windows "repair"? would that be a boot from the windows install CD?

got it fixed

Ended up at the MS site and used the"FIX IT" option there which checked out the PC for any issues.
It did find that the DVD drive was not seen, but then it looked into the registry and removed the upper and lower DVD filter entries.
After that the PC now sees the drive and the wife thinks that I'm really smart that I got it fixed.
So that MS site is worth something at least.

Well , good to know "Fix it " fix it ...This "Fix it" reputation is spreading positively , as it repaired an error in launching Internet explorer for me once ..
Will leave the other steps for a harder case since it's solved.. Good luck .
