Major Overclocking Problem...
I have an XP 1800+ cooled by a Volcano7+. I just bought 256 megs of Crucial ram, and tried to OC. I OC'ed the FSB to 143 (not too high), and rose the core coltage to 1.90. But after that when I tried to run some programs, (Counter-strike, 3dMark2k1, JKII) my system completely froze, couldnt hit ctrl+alt+del either. So then I brought the FSB down to 142, and 141, but the same thing happened. Even tried bringing the voltage down to 1.85.
Wut is going wrong? Is my CPU bad? is the voltage to high or low? Do I need to change something else? Thanks in advance...

Set the volts/FSB to the default levels. Then OC the FSB up by 2-4 mhz, reboot, check stability, and if stable, go another 2-4. Once thw system gets unstable, back down and up the voltage a little and see if it's stable. Then repeat the whole thing over agian until it won't go any higher stabilitywise.

What are your settings for the ram in the bios?
What speed is the ram rated for?
Don't take such a huge first step when o/c. And don't go raising the voltage right off the bat either.
Remember, baby steps.

That voltage sounds a bit high to me, from what I am finding the default Vcore on the 1800+ is 1.75, making 1.90 quite a jump. Set the Vcore back to the default value and try from there. You dont need to up the Vcore until you hit instability, then raising the Vcore may provide better stability at higher speeds.
here is the OC report on the 1800+:
As for Overclock ability the result of standard Vcore1.75V 1642MHz(143x11.5) and Vcore2.05V 1713MHz(149x11.5) were obtained.
You can see that the 143 FSB was attained stably at the default Vcore....that 2.05 Vcore is going to put off a lot of heat too. Unless you have a true need to OC, which you really shouldn't on a 1.5Ghz processor I wouldnt try to push it too much, unless you get a rush out of those things

July 19th, 2002, 12:45 AM #5the speed is CAS 2.5. I will try to get it to 143 without raising the voltage like u guys said and go on from there. Will post my results later...Originally posted by OuTpaTienT

In my own experience with OCing .. I couldn`t gain stability at 143FSB without a memory voltage increase (default 2.5v increased to 2.8v) .. maybe because i use 3X 256MB PC2100 sticks of different brands ..
XP CPU usually reaches 140+ FSB without the need for voltage increase ...
Always monitor your CPU temp ...
Good luck
Who is the maker of your 512MB stick?*P.S.- Will 512 megs OC better than 256 megs of Crucial?
Anyway, the 256MB Crucial stick should OC really well without voltage increase (or minimum).

NEWBIE OC Question.
So is it as ez as going into bios and setting my FSB to 140?
What else is involed?
AMDXP 1900
MSI KT3 Ultra
2x256 Micron DDR PC/2100
4 case fans
Volcano 7 HS/Fan

You have to have very good air folw in your case, quality parts (especially RAM and PSU).
And you should keep an eye on the temps.
BTW, i have almost the same as your setup

Ken, wut are your system specs? And how much have u OC'ed (core voltage, mem voltage, etc.)?? I tried setting it to 143 FSB, 2.8 v, 1.9 core voltage. I think that may be the problem (core). Wut do u think?

Man .. you`re applying too much voltage on your CPU !!
My XP1900+ OC to 142FSB without any voltage increase.
You have to OC the CPU a little and test, if it passes the test then OC more and so on.. till you see instability then you increase the core voltage by small amounts and test ...etc
Don`t apply 1.9v without a reason coz that will make your CPU produce more heat and become unstable.
My System:
EP 8KHA+/XP1900+/Volcano7+/256MB X3 PC2100/ 400Watts EnerMax/GF4 Ti4200/WinXP Pro running at 143MHz FSB stable as a rock.

Memory set as Normal, no timing tweaks, Voltage at 2.8v.
CPU no voltage increase, temp at 43~45C full load.

ok, so in "n00b terms" your core voltage is default, but your mem voltage is set to 2.8 v? right?

Right. But!! MotherBoard Monitor (MBM5) and SiSoft Sandra detect my CPU voltage as 1.79v
although i didn`t increase it in the BIOS at all.

ok, well I set it to 141 FSB, core voltage at 1.775, mem voltage at 2.7. Im going to try 142 now, get back to ya l8r... thnx.

ok, well I cant seem to get it to 142 stable. It wont even load to windows when it's at 142 FSB. I've tried so many combinations. Any suggestions?

Did you tweak the voltage for memory and core at 142FSB?
What are your temps? .. yea, and please mention your PSU details...
-
July 19th, 2002, 02:56 AM #18
Yes I did. I tried 142 at 1.775 core 1st, but when that didnt work i set it to 1.80. Then when that didnt work, i brought it back down to 1.775 and set the mem voltage to 2.8.
I am using the 300 watt psu that came with this antec SX-830 case...ThE GreatwhitE~

Nope. My hotel is about 7 miles from the airport, and I'll be working at a facility right next to the airport.
