X problem

I've installed a new video card. Upgrade of a Geforce 2 mx to a Geforce 4 Mx. kudzo found the new card and asked me did I want to get rid of the old card configuration. I said yes.

I downloaded the source files for linux from Nvidia.com and did the normal make install.

Now, when i start X it says that it can't find the GLcore module and X will not start.

here are some excerpts from the XFree86.0.log file

"(II) LoadModule: "GLcore"
(WW) Warning, couldn't open module GLcore
(II) UnloadModule: "GLcore"
(EE) Failed to load module "GLcore" (module does not exist, 0)"

"NV(0): DPMS enabled
Symbol __glXActiveScreens from Module /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/extensions/libdri.a is unresolved!
Symbol __glXActiveScreens from module /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/extensions/libdri.a is unresolved!"

Looking through the readme file it states that the above section should read "II NVIDIA(0):....." not "II NV(0)...."

Anybody had this trouble?? How can I fix it without re-installing?

Under the Module section of /etc/X11/XF86Config-4, comment out Load GLcore and Load dri

it should look somethinmg like:

Section "Module"
# Load "GLcore"
Load "dbe"
# Load "dri"
Load "extmod"
Load "glx"
Load "pex5"
Load "record"
Load "xie"
Load "v4l"
EndSection

when you are through.

Did you follow the Readme on nVidia's site?

May sound but in Linux if you are told to read it, read it.

Also make sure you changed
Quote:
Driver "nv"

to
Quote:
Driver "nvidia"

Also also add
Quote:
Load "glx"

to the Modules section

try what was mentioned above. that *should* do it. if not run Xconfigurator and just create a new xf86config-4 file.

Ok. I have made the changes you all have suggested. I also ran Xconfigurator and created a new XFree86 file but my problem is with the installation of the kernel driver. I get error saying that file is not found.

"/usr/include/asm/timex/h:10:21 asm/msr.h: no such file or directory"

this is when I run the :make install command for the Kernel.

This is being done on RH7.3 btw. I downloaded the tar's from Nvidia's website.

Any additional Ideas???

Make sure you have the kernel-source RPM installed...

I'm not using the RPM's. I'm installing from the source .gz file.
