different file names

my co-worker wanted me to get his pictures from a hard drive. he said it has an OS on it (win xp). i tried to boot it and it just hangs when it is verifying dmi pool.......

so i tried to make it a slave and boot it with a drive that boots, but when i open my computer, and click on the the second drive and i see files but it has symbols instead of names. i can't open any file...

does anyone have a clue?

Yep.

If its NTFS:

1) backup the drive with a drive imaging program ( if you can, just incase you screw up the drive worse )

2) run chkdsk


If its FAT32

If it was ntfs and her computer was fat32, the os wouldn't even see the volumes on it.

It has probably it's fat corrupted. Try scandisking it as inanis said.

I've seen funny corruptions fat8 disks that contain gigabytes of data (usually 4gigabyte) and fat32 drives that contain cazillion of folders with odd filenames
