| Can't get my disc drives to work
Hello, I'm new, but I just recently built my own Computer consisting of an Athlon XP1800, Gigabyte GA 7VRXP Mobo (rev. 2.0), Maxtor 40-Gig ATA 133 7200 RPM hard drive, 512 Meg DDR PC2700 Crucial Memory, GeForce4 MX440 AGP, Philips 40x12x40 CD-RW, Artec 16x DVD, Iomega internal Zip, Mitsumi Floppy & Windows ME.
Everything works fine & I even switched the mobo to 133, so my Athlon runs at 1533 MHZ.
The only thing is that I cannot get my DVD drive to work.
My CD-RW works fine by itself, but whenever I hook the cable up to the DVD & CD-RW, neither of them will work. Even when I disconnect the CD-RW and plug in the DVD Separately, it still won't work.
I've tried to run the search for new hardware option in the control panel, but it doesn't do anything.
Also, I haven't figured out where to plug in the 'Audio in' on the Mobo for the DVD. I plugged it in for the CD-RW, but then there's no place to put the plug for the DVD.
One more thing... The DVD will read the discs when I put them in, just the computer won't recognize the drive.
If ANY of this makes any sense at all, help would be appreciated.
If you need me to explain it a little better, let me know! I'm awful at explaining details.

Do you have the jumper on the DVD set properly ("master", "slave" or "cable select", depending on what you want)?
Edited: looks like you do, from your edited answer.
I don't think you can run two drives off one sound system; if you want sound from both, you'll need a separate card. |

well... I'm fairly new at all the technical computer stuff.
Would I be able to set the jumper in the 'setup'?
I just want BOTH of my drives to work. How do I do it? |

the jumper is actually located on the back of the drives, looks like a small plastic tab fitted over a couple of pins
there are (probably) three settings
master
slave
cable select
you need to have one drive as master, the other as slave
two masters or two slaves wont work together
just take some tweezers or your fingernails and pull the small tab out on one of the drives and move it to the set of pins you want |

In case you're still unclear about the jumpers, here's a picture of what the jumpers look like on most drives... |

oooooohhhhhh.....
Okay. I know what you're talking about.
Does it say on the back of the drive which pins are which setting?
Unfortunately, I'm stuck at work until 5 PM today, so I can't do it till then, but HOPEFULLY it will work!
Thx! |

yes your drive should have a diagram on it somewhere as to which set of pins equal what setting, either on the top the back or etched into the case somewhere close to the pins |

I once had a DVD drive that was giving me fits trying to install on a friend's computer. It actually turned out to be some kind of driver issue, but I can't remember exactly what it was. Seems like it was with a file named SCSI???? (something or other) even though it's an IDE drive. Sorry I can't be more specific.
As for the sound problem, you should be able to use digital sound instead of analog and do without the audio cable to the sound card. Find your CD or DVD drive in the Device Manager, find this screen in the properties, and check the "Enable digital..." box. Of course this won't help until Windows recognizes the drive.
Good luck! |

so, I DON'T need to plug in the L/R Audio cable to the board.
That makes my life much easier!
Damn work! I wish I didn't have to be here.
But I guess I wouldn't be able to pay for all of my toys if I didn't work. |

You should also check to make sure you don't have a UDMA cable hooked up to your DVD ROM, use the old standard ATA 33 cable. I used an ATA 66/100/133 cable on my DVD ROM and it gave me fits. You also prolly have only one spot on your mobo for a sound connection. |
