MOST USB devices are hot swappable. Not ALL. It can be DANGEROUS to your system having devices like digital cameras that create "removable device" drives and such.

Erk... I can't remember specifically right now, but there is a way to manually remove proggies from autostarting. It had something to do with [Run] and [Load] under some file for Windows 9x. I'm pretty sure there's a version of that for Win XP. I don't have admin access here at the school lab where I am now, so I'll figure it out when I go home. If someone knows what I'm talking about, then all the better.

Are you sure there isn't a check box for "show icon in tray" or similar in the window that opens when you double click that icon?
Would have sworn it was there. If not, unplug/plug-in a usb component and see if that check box isn't in the window that comes up.

You could just choose to "Hide Inactive Icons" and then manually go in and tell it which ones you want to show and hide. You can then hide it all the time.

This same Icon shows up in my systray when I have my USB printer turned on. The printer has a Smart memory card reader on it. The icon is there so that I can eject the card without damaging it electronically. I would suspect that this is the same for you except it is for your Zip drive. Try booting up without the Zip drive attached and see if it still appears. This icon may be normal whenever any type of USB supported memory device is connected.

Post back if you ever disable it.

I know that it disappears if I remove teh USB stuff, I was just hoping that there was some way to turn off the stupid icon from the tray... it's really nothing but curiosity I suppose!

T'aint what I meant. Guess I'm thinking of 2K though. There is a check box in 2K that will disable the icon. Don't normally run in XP as it wouldn't be "proper" for me to do so.
