| How can I force a modem off Com 1?
Ive no idea, my dialup era was over after dumping my Mac 5 years ago---
Trying to configure an old P2 200 to dial for a friends kid, his Creative modem is on com 1 causing a hardware failure and no dialing---he called Earthlink tech support and was told to contact the computer manufacturer (Hah!)
Can someone start me off?
PCI modem-
Maybe it needs an ISA modem?
Award 4.51 bios

Good luck dude..
Head into Device Mangler, right click on the modem and browse thru the tabs till ya find the one where is says what I/O and *deleted* it's on and that it's "Configured correctly" LOL.. There should be a button to click for edit or advance, possibly a checkbox. It's been awhile since I've ran W98 but what your looking to do is override the auto settings in that window. I can be done and I'm sorry I can't give exact instructions but these days I'm a BSD nutcase.. Please refrain from using foul language in the forums. King why force the modem off com1 (if you need to it may have jumpers on the board) if they do not have any serial devices why not just disable com1 in the Bios, this was how we dealt with it many moons ago you know in the BC era (before cable *LOL*) |

If it still doesn't work after trying the above, check that your Award BIOS is not one of those afflicted by the incurable millennium rollover bug.
The problem boards were those with Award Bios 4.5x dated between 4/26/1994 and 5/31/1995 (but may have been fitted to mobos up to 1998) and can cause all kind of hardware and s/ware problems.
And, yes, it is incurable, the only solution being replacement -- I know because I had one! (and it stopped my Motorola Modemsurfer 56k from working ) |

Yes, absolutely, you need to disable all on-board COM ports in the BIOS and while you're in there, be sure to disable Plug n' Play OS and let the BIOS manage the IRQ's, not Windows.

Toad, he doesnt really need to disable all com ports only the one that is afflicted, this would mean leaving one free for serial mouse or whatnot. |

scotlandtb,
It's DAMN crowded down there in the COM1,2,3,4 and IRQ 3,4 neighborhood. So, if you don't use 'em, why enable 'em? Anyway, I'm figuring he's probably smart enough to re-enable one if he needs it after he secures the proper port and IRQ for the modem...which is what he's asking help with, right? |

Ok here is what ive done---
disabled com port and chose com2 and appropriate ir for modem
puts modem back on com1 in modem properties
removed com 1 and modem via device manager
upon re-boot asks for W98 before continuing then loads com1 back
attempting to put modem on com2 as primary looks ok in bios then in modem props its back on com1
Next? Funky pre 2k bios? I dislike old stuff---
