hard drive space

i have a 41.9GB hard drive, and i have 6.89GB of free space right now, but when im downloading anything then the disk cleanup window pops up and says you have run out of free disk space. Why would it tell me im out of space when i still have 6 gigs free? btw, im downloading on KaZaA. Thanks for the reply

i m shooting in the dark as usual, but i ll give it a whirl. i think a hd needs a certain percentage of free space to work properly. i think your machine is telling you that you are running out of that free space. maybe burn some of your mp3s and get them off the hd so you can download without problems.

since you state that its a disk cleanup utility thats tellijg you this, maybe delete some cookies and temp internet files woud help. or run the disk cleanup utility itself.

good luck

brad

Sometimes disk space is falsely reported by Windows. Scandisk helps sometimes. Defragging might help a bit too. Run those and see how things work. If nothing changes, then start removing/backing up files.

I just ran Scandisk and Diskdefrag a few days ago, and i ran the disk cleanup tool, as well as Window Washer. I guess I'll just have to start burning some MP3's and backing up other info. Thanks for the reply though, im guessing windows is just a little off.

Windows usually builds itself a buffer..........

True, but it shouldn't be running a 6 GB buffer.

Yes this seems to happen a lot, just goto the properties of the disk and check for errors a lot of times Windows reports the size of the free space wrongly, and this should fix it.

Hope this helps!

Windows reserves a certain percentage of the HDD for the Recycle Bin. Maybe it's set too high?

Right-click on the Recycle Bin (I have Norton Utilities Recycle Bin so I'm not sure it would be the same in a default Windows setup) to change the percentage with the slider.
