Loud continuous beeping
For about 8 months my system worked beautifully but in the past two months I have been plagued some unknown flaw that I can't find. At random it seems like although fairly common when I play on some of my newer games (neverwinter, tropico and warcraft 3) to name a few, about 15 minutes into the game a loud beeping sound comes from my tower unit, and the green power light starts flashing and everything starts slowing down untill I reset or turn the computer off. but cruising the net or using my word processor never seems to cause this problem.
My system:
windows ME
256mb ddr ram
a7a266 socket a motherboard
40gig hard drive with lots of free space
direct x 8.0
Geforce 2 pro 64mb ddr graphics card

what's the CPU.. and your heatsink
this sounds like a CPU overheating warning sound.. have you checked the temp of your cpu? asus's temp gauge is not so good.. so u might be up to 10c hotter then what asus is showing.. u might need u a better heatsink.. or some artic silver..
but first things first.. cpu.. and heatsink..In life one must Chill

The fan sounds like its turning okay, but when I opened up the case earlier to remove and put back in teh memory, cables and some cards just to make sure something wasn't loose I did see a couple of dust bunnies, is it possible teh fan just isn't doing a good enough job?

I guess there really is no way of knowing for sure without trying, I have no idea how to replace a fan or can you just add a second one???

I would pull the side off, and set a window fan on it, and paly a game for a while to see if it still happens, if not, you have a heat issue, if it does, then you'll need some troubleshooting.
It could be that the MOBO has a powerdown on failure feature, and it's just borderline of shutting down.Just a thought.
Good Luck

Hello:
I've had that happen in the field during the summer months. It is the CPU overheating warning alarm that asus uses.
Since it shows up when you are working the processor under heavy load but not under light usage, that pretty much confirms it.
Probably the HS fan is going bad. That's what was wrong with that asus machine in the field. Replace the HS fan or get a bigger heatsink for the AMD chip.
To verify, stress the cpu and when the alarm sounds restart the machine, immediately go into bios and check the temp. I'm confident it will be above the warning level.
So, best wishes in resolving your problem.

yeah I should have also mentioned.. I had a Asus A7V and a few other asus.. boards.. as cwizard said.. that is the asus warning sound for a over heatecpu.. as I've heard this myself.. and know it to be true.. that is y from what you said.. it was a cpu overheating problem.. it only shows up when u r playing games.. and so forth.. any thing that stresses your cpu..
if u have never done it before u might want to take it into a shop.. and have the heatsink replaced with a better one.. its up to u.. butit sounds like a heat problem..In life one must Chill

A fan can be turning but still be defective because it is running erratically or too slow.
But since a HSF is not that expensive, I would get a new one and try it...if your temps go cooler (use something like MotherBoard Monitor -- MBM...IF your motherboard supports hardware monitoring that is) or the beeping stops, you've found the problem.
Of course, be sure it's mounted properly and with a good thermal compound sparingly applied.

Maybe video oveheat causing the chipset to lock.....try running the game in lowest res and see if it still happens. (Games stress/heat the video card more than anything else)
