Really weird behavior from my tyan 'puter

I am having some problems with my computer.

My main has an ATI 8500 DV video controller as well as a Sound Blaster audigy Both have an I-1394 port. I'm trying to get my private LAN to connect to this computer. While trying to troubleshoot my computer I disabled both of the I-1394 host controllers on my computer because I don't use them at this time, the moment I did so I was disconnected from the net even though I connect through an ethernet adapter because I have DSL.

when I attempted to reconnect to the net I was unable to do so until after I had reset my password. I'm completely baffled as to why disabling the I-1394 ports on my computer cause me to lose my password?

Below is a short list of my computer devices and I am running Windows XP with the SP 1 service pack added.

    DUAL 1600 ATHLON
    ALL-IN-WONDER RADEON 8500DV
OHCI Compliant IEEE 1394 Host Controller -disabled
OHCI Compliant IEEE 1394 Host Controller -disabled
Adaptec AIC-7899 Ultra160 PCI SCSI Card
    Adaptec AHA-2940U2W - Ultra2 SCSI
    Creative SB Audigy
    3Com EtherLink Server 10/100 PCI NIC (3C980C-TXM)
Realtek RTL8139 Family PCI Fast Ethernet NIC

and still unable to connect to any of the computers on my net but fortunately I do have connection to the Internet.
any help it all would be greatly appreciated in telling me why this happen.

    Sincerely,
    vern

what DSL service and how is it setup?
When I had Qwest, I had 2 Nics. Changing any settings on the second one which wasn't connected to the dsl, caused the dsl to stop working until I went through the setup again. Just crappy DSL setup and software is what I chalked it up to. Also was running XP.

    Hi Dragonb,

Im using Bellsouth w/ Westel ethernet DSL router. Yes I do have 2 different ethernet controllers installed. One for the private LAN and one to connect to the router to the net. The router is set up using PPPOE via a WAN-miniport to connect to the net.
The FireWire connections are in the network connections folder and they were listed as "LAN or high-speed Internet" and they are disabled.

I really didnt think that changing the settings on one ethernet controller would affect the other ethernet controller unless Im changing a protocal, or client. Besides Im not changing the settings for the ethernet controller, its the I-1394 connectors I am changing, right??

They say technology slows down for no one. I know it outruns my wallet. I figure its because my wallet isn't light enough yet.

    right.
That's why I was baffled when I changed the IP address on my other nic, the DSL quit working.
XP does treat all LAN connections the same, so the firewire does fall into that category.
Sorry, just was throwing in my experience too. Don't have a solution or any idea why it does that. Maybe someone else will come along and know what's going on.
Of course now with cable, same 2 NIC's, I can make changes and the cable still works.
