| Computer will not boot
I have this old p233 that I wanted to load win2k on. The computer will not boot off the hdd. No matter what I do, it will say "Disk Read Error." I tried going back into win2k setup(using the startup disks) and writing both a new mbr and boot sector. That didn't work. In linux, I could use a startup disk. I dont know of such a thing for win2k. I have the boot order set as C, A, SCSI. Does anyone know what the problem could be? With my old 800mb hdd, NT4 would boot fine. I had to get a new hdd though because win2k won't fit in 800mb. The hdd is fine because it was in my other computer for a long time with no problems.
Here are the specs:
P233mhz
256mb ram
Some A-Open mobo
12gb maxtor 5400rpm hdd
Tekram DC-390T SCSI controller
4x Toshiba SCSI cdrom
a 3com 10mb NIC |

Does the motherboard support a 12gig drive?
i've seen P2 motherboards that wont take anything larger then 8.4, Aslo have you checked the cable/bios settings etc ? |

I would bet that board does not support a drive above 8GB...
EDIT - Great minds think alike. |

Thought it was a P2, since it's a "normal" pentium i would say it does not support the 12gig drive.
Check Aopens site for a possible BIOS update. |

Well I just tried the EZ BIOS software that was on the maxblast diskette and it still doesnt work. EZ bios loads and then comes up with the same error again. This is getting to be real annoying. Real annoying since to use win2k setup, I have to use the 4 startup disks because I cant boot off the cdrom because the scsi controller sucks. Oh yeah, the BIOS, win2k setup, and maxblast all detect the drive as the correct size. |

First how did you format the drive? (FAT or NTFS) Do you have another drive to try in it? Can you put in a reg cdrom and give it a try without using the SCSI controller ? |

Will not boot with or without the scsi controller in there. Its NTFS and my 800mb NTFS drive boots fine. |

My good computer will not boot off the drive either. I did a surface scan of the disk and it found no errors. Im going to try to format it again... |
