Without wading through all the threads. I had this problem recently because I deleted a partion that held ntldr and ntdetect.

I used MS's info found here

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NTLDR

Once you restore the files, I recommend to go in C: and mark them as hidden.

To restore Windows XP Professional versions of Ntldr and Ntdetect.com on x86-based systems

1. Start Recovery Console by using the Windows XP Professional operating system CD.
Navigate to the system partition root and type the following commands from the Recovery Console prompt:
copy drive:\i386\ntldr

2. copy drive:\i386\ntdetect.com

In the preceding two commands, drive represents the letter of the CD-ROM that holds the Windows XP Professional installation files.

3. Answer the Overwrite system? (Yes/No/All): prompts by pressing Y.

4. Restart the computer.

One more question, are you Multi-Booting this machine ?
Like maybe Linux on a partition ?
If you have multiple Windows O/S's on it you MUST install in this order or XP will not start;

1. Windows 95, Windows 98, or Microsoft® Windows® Millennium Edition (Windows Me)
2. Microsoft® Windows NT® Workstation version 4.0 with Service Pack 4 or later
3. Microsoft® Windows NT® Server version 4.0 with Service Pack 4 or later
4. Microsoft® Windows® 2000 Professional
5. Windows XP Professional

After a failed dual boot setup with Linux I formatted the Linux partitions but couldn't boot to Windows because of GRUB. I then deleted the partitions and then merged the unused space with my Windows partition. GRUB gone but can now only boot to Windows with the XP CD. I am getting the "NTLDR is missing" message when trying to boot to my hard drive. In the Recovery Console I ran "copy d\i386\ntldr c:\" and "copy d:\i386\ntdetect.com c:\" but I got "Access denied". I then copied the the files to a floppy and copying ("copy a:\ntldr c:\" and ("copy a:\ntdetect.com c:\") was successful. NTLDR still missing. I ran FIXBOOT C:, FIXMBR and BOOTCFG /REBUILD in the Recovery Console. NTLDR still missing. I ran a repair install. NTLDR still missing. What next?
