no boot in removable drive bays

Abit KG7 Raid mobo, maxtor drives. Didn't set up raid array yet.
WinXP will install and run but not if in a drawer (80 wire cable, of course). If the drive is in the drawer I get an unmountable boot volume. Tried an MSI K7N420 mobo and get a 'not ready reading drive C 'abort,retry,etc.' But drive will boot if not in the drawer.
Same problem with 98se on both boards. Sure, it would be easy if I tossed the drawers, but I've used this system for 6 yrs on my past machines. Experimented with a Promise controller card (not raid) and drive will boot if in a drawer. Yes, I'm adamant about using drawers. Don't want to bore you with the explanation. This is really strange. Has anyone run into this? Will I run into this on the Abit board if I set up my raid array and put the drives in drawers?

Where are you connecting the drive to on the motherboard? Which IDE port?

HD is on IDE 1. cd rom is plugged into IDE2.
