| ScanDisk won't work!
Could someone please help!
I own a Sony Vaio (yes I know they suck) and I'm having a hard time running a scan disk. I tried shutting everything down, including the screen saver. Didn't work. then i tried it in Safe Mode and once it gets to be about 80% done, it just freezes. I have run different virus programs and scan disk programs and nothing has come up. I'm about to throw it out the window .
Help!

Are you sure it's freezes? Or is it just doing the surface scan portion (which can take many hours)?
Go into the options of Scandisk and turn off surface scan. |

It gets to be about 80% done, after starting over and over again a few times. Then the little icon which is moving the whole time just stops moving and the computer locks up, completely. The only way to get it to re-start is by doing ALT+CTRL+DEL. Unless it's still checking it. But let me try your suggestion.
Thanks
PS> it also doesn't do a Disk Defrag... |

Okay, amke a boot disk. Goto Start>Settings>Control Pannel, double click on Add/Remove Programs, and click on the tab marked Startup Disk. Tell it to craete a disk (you'll need a blank 3.5 inch floppy). Now restart the computer with the floppy in the drive. If it asks, tell it to boot w/out CDROM support.
Now you shoould be at a line that says something like:
A:\>_
type in:
scandisk c:
and press enter. It's an ugly version of scandisk, but it works. Let it run through. |

I had the same problem with a really great Computer, the SONY Vaio, which I posted here abouts . Hmmm..just woke..
let me see if I can find or remember how I solved it, using that wonderful ME ...errr, the OS , not me..
I am thinking of starting a SONY Fan Club. By the way, if it's either the J150 or the J200 , you can thank me for the dubious pleasure of having a Reference Manual to peruse at their Web Site as I fought them 6 months to get them to keep their word and post it. It actually got to their Legal Dept.
See you later. Scans and defrags fine now. Thanks to TecHIMO--not to SONY !

P.S. You can always visit Tech Support. Take Alligator Alley across to Ft. Myers and the next town, Coral Something...This is their major T.S. enchilada , with 600 workers thinking an Intel chipset supports an AMD CPU...or at least they did for 6 months. |

camille, did you try ctrl-alt-del to shut everything down through the task manager?... the only things you need to leave running there are sys tray and explorer... I would end task on everything else... disable your screensaver and antivirus and task manager and try again. I've run into similar problems all the time and this usually fixes it... |
