Hello,
I was trying to install Win98 on a PC without operating system, so I made a mistake as I was creating Dos partition/Logical DOS Drive. Now I want to delete it and start afresh but the system requires me to enter Volume Label of which I do not know.
I'm trying it for the first time. Please advice me on what to do.
Thank you very much for your time.

i think the "volume label" is just what you name the partition ex. "My Partition". can be anything you want. as far as deleting a partition, try low-level formating it. its the only way i know of, but i would get others opinions b/c llf is possibly damaging to your hdd.

If you have not formatted the new partition, then there is no volume name. You just leave it blank and hit the "enter" key when it prompts you for it. |

either that or plug the drive into another machine and get it from there
as for getting rid of the partition use fdisk or something similar |

Hello,
I thank all of you for your advice.
Cracked, I do not know what low formating means. Please, can you break it down for me.
Evilrick, I tried what you said and the system asked if am sure I want to delete, I typed Y which means yes but the system saied that my entry is invalid. So I'm still in trouble.
Please help!!! |

When you're in FDISK and it's showing you what partitions you have, does it show a volume name?
Post a list of your partitions and their volume labels. |

When deleting a partition it asks for the partition name (this is in fdisk). You can't type anything you want in there.
When viewing the partition table, or even when in the delete section it will show the volume label in the info. Type that when it asks for the volume label.
I suppose it's some safety precaution by microsoft to minimy false deletions.

As already suggested, it may be necessary to connect the disk to a machine that can boot into Windows. From there open my computer and right click on the drive and select properties. Type in some text to change the volume label. Now click OK. You should be able to re-enter Fdisk and delete the partition by typing in the text you had entered when re-naming the partition.
It's possible for a virus to rename the partition with characters that you can not recreate on your keyboard. The only way to delete this partition would be to rename it as previously instructed, or by a low level format.

The easiest way to delete it (If you have access to the software), is to use partition magic or one of its gui clones to do it... it won't bother you with the volume label... |

If you did not give the partition a name, just hit enter when it asks for volume name.
If you did give it a name, type in the name.
