| can't delete folder
my trial version of Seventh Knight Software ended and i can't remove the ad page. each time that i boot up the ad fills the screen and i can only minimize it. the delete button , [x], is disabled. an uninstall.exe file which had a padlock icon, and a wrkstn (Work Station) folder accompany the ad. when i try to delete them i get, "access denied, file may be in use". they can't be deleted in dos. i had to download a "process view" software, kill the uninstall.exe process with this software and then delete uninstall.exe in dos. the wrkstn folder cannot be deleted this way because it does not appear in the process view software list. therefore i cannot kill it. it only appears in a path name as follows:
name::: path
process.exe::: c:\wrkstn\bin
any removal suggestion ?
thanks. |

Wow, remind me never to install that slimeware.
The only thing I can think of is that the program has set a policy or folder attributes to forbid you from deleting that folder. Did you try just changing the folder attributes? |

Can you delete or at least rename c:\wrkstn\ via DOS boot disk so the file shouldn't be started again? Then use Windows Explorer to view the entire contents and delete the related file (or whole folder if it isn't needed). |

Boot disk is the way to go, unless of course you have NTFS. But I would delete te folder from the BDisk.

I don't suppose it could be deleted in Safe Mode if you couldn't in DOS, but it's still worth a try. |

Dpends, if your "DOS" is really just a command prompt window than Windows programs are actually still running and you can change the foleders and files of thoses processes. When you boot from a DOS disk then those Windows processes are not running therefore you will have different abilities. |

i booted up with a floppy but couldn't get to command mode. i got a:\GHOST (i have NORTON SYSTEMWORKS 2002). changed to the a drive and did dir, result;
IBMBIO_____COM____43,777_____07_31_01____4:55p
IBMDOS_____COM____42,550____ " "
COMMAND____COM____53,541___ " "
MOUSE______COM_____37,681___ " "
AUTOEXEC___BAT______63_______10_12_02____11:05am "
GHOST______<DIR>
MOUSE______INI______28________ " " 6:38p
accessing AUTOEXEC took me to NORTON GHOST application, and IBMDOS gave> PCDOS___VERSION__7.10, (C) IBM CORP.
COMMAND just showed a blinking cursor and there was no response to the keyboard, so i had to power off.
shouldn't i be able to access COMMAND and IBMDOS which are showing 53.5k and 42.5k bytes? about attributes, the owners of wrkstn folder have made themselves equal partner with me on my machine. here's what they can do; ____full control of this folder, subfolders and files__create files/write data__ traverse folder/execute file___create folders/append data__ delete subfolders and files___read permissions/change permissions___change ownership etc.,etc. i can deny these permissions but i wan't to remove the folder. |

When booting dos you will not get the option to get into "command mode". That is a win2k mode only, DOS does not use it. A better way might be to edit the registry so that the program does not start. Be carful when editing the regestry, you can completly foul up you PC, to the point that the only way to correct it to reload the OS. Open regedit and search for "run" and it will take you to several places in the registry that contains information on programs that are loaded at startup. Make sure you only delete the one(s) you want. I had this same problem with a mp3 player that would start at bootup and splash a ad on the screen. That anoyed me greatly so I deleted the references to it in the registry it now it does not start.
Also make sure you backup the registry and and be sure to update the emergncy repair disk (run ntbackup from the command prompt and select the emergency repair disk option) before you muck around with the registry.
Also you will need local administrator rights to edit the registry.
Good Luck |

You may this idea a little backwards. Boot up with the DOS disk, go to the C: drive. Then rename the c:\wrkstn folder. If you can not see your actual C: drive then the partition may be formated with NTFS.
