IE problem w/ pop ups. PLz help

Hello,

I have a problem with IE 6.0.2800.1106. I am running Win 98 SE and have updated windows since 2 months ago. I cannot update windows either. Another Prob. Any way when I get pop ups they will appear transparent (you will see whatever is underneather the pop up. I thought maybe its a Java script compatibilty prob. Maybe. It is worse with java script pop ups. The ones I want to pop up (java's) will appear transperant. SOMETIMES a POP UP triggered by entry of a page (advertisement) will infact work! I downloaded adaware and scanned for stuff. I deleted things like gator and other BEFORE ad aware. And I do yhave Kazza. Would that create problems on my computer? THanks for your help.

PS: Does anyone know why I cannot update my Windows? I download the software and restart but it does not do that NEW SOFTWARE thing on windows startup and it still saYS I need to upgrade. Thanks for your help.

well with windows 98, you should not have gone with IE 6.0. It has some compatibility problems with 98. And yes, you can, go to Add/Remove programs in the control panel, and remove the service pack. I dont know about KaZaA being the problem, except it is loaded with adware. If you dont want adware, get kaZaA lite. Go to google and search it.

Hmmmmmmm, been running Win98se and IE6 ever since it came out with no problems.

Try this:

Click Start>>Run and type in sfc then hit OK; the System File Checker utility will open.

Select the second option (Extract one file from installation disk), then, in the white field, enter oleaut32.dll.

Click Start (in the SFC box...NOT the Windows Start button), and in the next window, where it says Restore From, enter either c:\windows\options\cabs or the path to the CD (depending on whether the installation files are on your hard drive), then press OK.

Once it's done, you'll be prompted to reboot.

All should again be well

SFC is the System File Checker, it finds system files that have been corrupted and replaces them with good versions. I've found this utility very handy when I get weird actions from programs in Windoze.

It sounds like when you installed a piece of software that it replaced the oleaut32.dll file with an incompatible version. If you follow the instructions listed above, it should restore this file and clear up the transparent popup problem.

I emboldened the file name in the above instructions to make the file name easier to find in the previous post.

I'm using OE6 w/SP1 on Windows 98 SE w/no problems. But from time to time, Windows has some new update scan and installation file. Usually, Windows does install this by itself. But sometimes it locks.

Have to check with someone more skilled than I on how to get this new Update file to install.

If you have just a recovery disk, then look in C:\Windows\Options\Cabs, as the recovery disk should have placed all the cab files in this folder for quick access.
