umountable boot error / stop:0x000000ED

i'm new to this board and even though i've looked through the posts of similar problems i still could not find my answer.

ok here's my specs:

windows xp pro

800mhz compaq presario

24 gb and 20gb maxtor hd

512 mb SDram

my story:

Last night i installed counter strike and after fiddling with the video modes in the game i began to play. Shortly afterwards my parents came home and i had to forcefully shut down the comp (hold the power down for 5 sec or so) and run to bed and pretend that i was already asleep (Dont ask). Then i turned on the comp this morning and i got the "blue screen of death" as it is called around here. It gave me a unmountable boot error.

it also gave me this at the bottom of the screen: stop:0x000000ED. I am currently using my brothers comp.

interesing details:

I know that some people will tell me to reformat, but for me that isnot a choice because my dad has very important files on my comp.

I dont have the xp boot disk so i cant run chdsk/r

i am a heavy Kazaa and Mirc user and i heard of a worm going around that formats your hard drive on every 9th 19th and 29th of the month. ALthough i never saw actuall evidence as mcafee and norton never found a virus on my computer.
*TODAY IS THE 29th*

any suggestions or comments would be highly appreciated.

Might try this link to gain more info.

XP does have a feature in there that automatically upgrades the OS without concent. it can be disabled. It could have been that your computer was in the process of updating when you had shut the power off button.

As for using the chkdisk/r that is not gonna reformat your drive. and IMO you really should follow the rules of your fathers home and with his computer expecially if your father has important files on his comp that he allows you to use. What comes around goes around.

If you have experience with linux then by all means you could but to be honest I don't see that as a viable option in this case when you can solve the problem with windows.

Yes - Linux does has cd burning software but I'm not sure that's the best solution since installing it woud wipe out a part of the hard drive. I'm saying this because you said you have XP Pro and I'm assumingh that the builder chose NTFS. AFAIK there are not GNU tools to resize NTFS partitions. No if you have FAT32 for your file system then it might have a better chance of working.

Still - I think there's a simplier way to go about this. You said you have Norton and Mcafee - now I"m not sure about Mcafee but I know that Norton's cd was bootable. You could boot to that and then run a full virus scan. I'm not sure what would turn up but you might get some clues as to why it's doing this.

Don't go installing another OS yet though if you're trying to recover data. There are some recovery tools built into Windows XP. We should try those first.

Let us know what turns up..

I have the exact same problem (stop:0x000000ED) with you, except that my computer shut down because there was an electricity black out.

Could you please be more detail on how you fixed the problem?

I would really really really appreciate it.
