CDRW and DVD won't run

Just came in from work and discovered that all trace of my E: drive (CDRW) has disappeared from my machine. It isn't in "My computer" and there is no sign of it in my boot up screen or in my CMOS setup. I've tried finding it through "install new hardware" with no luck!

My DVD is also not working, this drive is recognised by my machine, but, when I insert a disc all I get is D:\ is not accessible!!

What the bloomin hell has happened

I run a;
1GHZ Athlon
512 SDram
40HDD (71% free)
WIN 98SE
K7SEM mobo with Sis chipset

Please help,
woody

w00dy:

How are the CDRW and DVD cabled? How are they jumped?

Do you have both on the same channel?

Without your answering these questions, I'd advise that you slave the DVD on the Primary Channel, and Master the CDRW on the Secondary Channel.

Good luck.

Did you notice the smell of smoke near the machine? Like bread burning?

J/K....

If the CDRW is not seen by BIOS, most likely either the power cable is loose or the data cable is loose. The drive is simply not communicating with the BIOS, and at that basic level it's either the wiring is loose or refer to my first sentence about the drive being toast.

I'd first secure all cables to the drive. Unless it's recognized at BIOS level it will never get into windows.

Thanks, the CDRW now seems okay, cabling was loose, however, the DVD still appears to be not working. When I put a disc in it still says, D:\ unaccessible, please insert a disc and try again!

My DVD is on my BIOS, does appear to run as it powers up, it just won't read anything>

cheers
