| Installing Win 98 (Yes a legal version)
Hey guys, im back.
I finally gave up and purchased Win 98 Full version. If someone needs me to prove I am telling the truth, I can scan the front of the CD for all the mods to see.
Well, now I am up to the installation part. I have had much trouble getting it installed. It seems that some days are better than others.
At one point It was fully installed and I was setting up the control panel, time zone, start up programs, and all of a sudden a blue screen showed up and told me I had done some fault and would need to restart. So great, now It doesnt even advance at all.
You can tell windows is loading, but there is no start menu, no sand timer showing it is working. Just a blank default background.
Well, what do I do? I decided to reformat the C: drive again, and did it twice, just for good measure. Now I am reinstalling the software again. Any suggestions on how to get this to work?

How about some system Info might help.
Also is the system overclocked either cpu, or unsupported cpu on the MOBO, both of which can cause problem like your telling

Is your system overclocked? If so set it back to defaults and try intalling then.

Thanks for the fast replies.
Sorry, I am a stupid newbie. Youll have to bear with my lack of knowledge to help me.
No, my system isnt overclocked, although I have no idea what overclocking is or how to do it. If you have any ideas of what I should check out, let me know.
The motherboard is an old ECS P5VX-B 1.2. Memorywise, it only supports the standard 72 Pin ram. So I have 98 MB of Ram, I think that should be enough for Win 98.
I am doing a surface scan right now, and when started, it looked like there were plenty of bad clusters, although the surface scan finished and said that there were no errors on the disk.
Im going to go ahead and reinstall Win98, hopefully something will have changed with the surface scan being completed.

Welcome chris,
If you can list the system (mother board, video card, which hard drive) etc. we might be able to help.
Also, List the error you get when you start up, that will help the troubleshooting process a LOT!

Thanks Vern- Here is everything I know.
Motherboard
ECS (Elite) P5VX-B Version 1.4 (not 1.2 as stated above)
Pentium 1 200mhz
Hard Drive
Fujitsu M1638TAU
2.5 GB Disk Space
Sound Card
SB Live
Memory
96 MB RAM (2 16MB chips from the factory, 2 32 MB chips of Kingston ValuRam)
The Motherboard has some chips in it from AWARD software, AMIKEY and Dallas.
Its got a 3.5 inch floppy drive, a 12X CD drive, and a 12 X 2 X 2 CD burner. I want to get it running so I can have internet access through our wireless network.
Should I remove all the PCI cards and install them once I have Win 98 running well?
As far as the errors go, I havent got the software reinstalled yet, but once I do, Ill let you know. I tried to reinstall, but the computer froze up while copying files needed for windows setup. Im about to try again.

edit:
also, win98 is hardly a POS. it doesn't have any security & the memory management was ad hoc in some places, but by & large it ran on a lot of different hardware & was very easy to use (installing hardware & software, making system changes, etc)...qualities which all the linux distros followed suit.

Chrismckinless,
if the error occurs again, please try to give use the exact text. considering that you've had some difficulties installing, it would indeed be a good idea to remove all the cards except for the video when you try again. |

true....very true..Prester....It was very easy....but it was well known for the BSD.....which was one of the reasons I started looking at linux....but you are correct.....linux is a little more complicated to install.....(quietly going to stand in the corner) I'll shaddup now..... |
