Linksys router trouble

Hi everybody, a challenge for you.

The diag lED on my Linksys BEFSR41 router is just blinking. I have not made any changes to my set-up in over a month. I was last on the internet on two diffeent machines yesterday.

My current set-up is PC(via Linksys NIC)->Linksys router->Linksys cable modem. If I remove the router from my set-up, I connect to the internet without any problems. Once my router is put back in, I cannot connect to anything on my network or on the web. I have pressed the reset button on the router and have cycled its power. Ping also cannot hit the router.

How do I tell if the router reset took?

Is it possible it is dead?

Any thoughts on what to try next?

Thanks

Did you hold the reset button until the red light turned on and off again?

The other thing to do is assign a static IP address to the computer (whatever it would normally be), and then try to get into the router's diagnostic page and flash the f/w. If that doesn't work, I think it's dead.

Thanks for the suggestions. As for the CAT 5 cable, the one connecting my router and cable modem was successfully used when I connected with the router removed from my configuration.

I talked to Linksys, they are telling me of ongoing issues with the 1.44 firmware release. They had me load the 1.42 firmware. They also had me put my NIC MAC address in the WAN MAC address field of the Linksys MAC Address Cloning set-up page.

Does this seem odd? I do not recall having ever put any information in these fields previously.

Thanks

That's more of a ISP requirement but it certainly won't hurt anything. Did flashing the older f/w get rid of that blinking diag light?

I just checked, I'm using 1.43. I only flash when I have to.

Once the router was flashed with 1.42, the blinking diag LED stopped. All network and internet capabilities were then restored. Two odd observations:

-I had never entered any information into the MAC Address Cloning fields that I remember.

-my router had had the 1.44 firmware version flashed to it in early December. So I had a firmware downgrade.

Thanks to all for the assistance.

Jack,

I'm having trouble too. I just updated my f/w today. My outlook Express cannot reach my mail server the first time. I have to cancel/stop it's first attempt then hit send/rcv again and it will go through. Also when I try to DL a file I sometimes get hung up and have to recycle my Cable Modem. Linksys had me set the routers MTU to 900 and it has improved but still have the E-Mail prob every time and get hung up DLing a little less frequent. Seems to happen everytime when using the Poker Stars network. My internet also performs flawlessly when I bypass the router. Linksys said my router could be going out. Keep me informed of anything you find to fix the prob and I will do the same.
