Now I'm Scared.

Having received my 400th green sweater last year, da DOOOG decided to do things a little different this year..

Well, when people asked , "What do you want for Christmas", rather than responding, "A kiss from the lips of my true--love-fair", or "You don't have to get daDOOg anything" [and getting another green sweater], I took a practical tack--

Being that I was building two rigs and needed a few more items, I asked for specific computer items--I mean S*P*E*C*F*I*C [ Item Name and #, Vender, printout from on--line] for a couple of items.

One was the ThermalTake Volcano 9, figuring that if the 75CFM was a bit over-kill on HI, I could replace it with some RPM fan and use the Smart 2 fan as a case fan to run on low and blast-off when needed. Or keep it on the HSF. (Plus a tube of ArcticSilver3 ) as I don't know how good the Zalman grease supplied with the all-copper Flower plus Fan Cooler is.)

Anyhow, I heft the sucker and it feels like a brick
Heavier (is it my imagination than the Zalman cooler copper flower HS with a seperate Fan on a bracket. Or maybe my imagination.

I am afraid of a cracked Motherboard(s) with all that Heft

I don't think the TT V9 installs on the Mobo screw holes--but directly (all 80mm X 92mm or so) on the Mobo. I plan to use a Zalman bracket with a quiet 92 mm fan as blowing on the HSF for
x-tra cooling, plus a back-up in case of HSfan-failure.

[The Zalman flower will get two quiet fans on bracket--in case of fan failure.]

What can I do about ALL that HEFT ? ? Short of returning for say a Dr.Thermal lo-CFM.

Anybody else living in violation of the AMD 300Gram rule ?

With heavy HSF's, they tell you to remove the HSF when you move the Computer. What is "move" Certainly NYC to CA. What about from the LR to the Kitchen? Don't I have to clean the CPU core and HS before reapplying Artic 3? Means pulling the CPU.

Please tell me that a Mobo can handle 500 grams + and I am over reacting. And it be the TRUTH.

The TT Volcano 9 has some nice features--like a sensor that can stick to the CPU and 3 speeds and 75 CFM (it claims) at top ER speed.

And everybody critices the Zalman--but I figure two fans with one a smart fan as back-up [maybe the TT Smart 2 with the stickey CPU sensor] , it will work-out. Plus I already have it at $18 for everything, including bracket arm and 2800(?) rpm 92mm fan.

Is a heavy HSF safe ?

Nobody has a hefty HSF ?

Any advice about it ?

A needless worry--or a realstic one ?

Ok Meg!
Below is a link to overclockers web site. It lists several of the heavy heat sinks and fan combos. One of which weighs 730g!

Here: http://www.overclockers.com/articles507/

I suggest you verify with your motherboard manufacturer that itll hold the weight before you try to mount it.

Also here is a link to a very heavy hs/fan combo(650G) made for Athlons(It requires a motherboard that has special mounting holes in it):
http://www.swiftnets.com/products/mcx462plus.asp

And another same as above:
http://www.awaremag.com/hardware/sin...socketa_9.html

Apparently you can go above the AMD limit as long as the motherboard has the proper mounting holes for the combos.

I found these sites using google :

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&l...sink+fan+heavy

Good luck
Vern

Heavy HS/Fan assemblys are usually "safe" for stationary usage only.

AMD gives maximum weight's on HS's for transport, I forget the numbers, it seems like 34 oz ??

Here's the quote->>

The maximum weight for a heatsink is specified
as 180g by Intel CPU(Socket 370) and as 300g by AMD

Just mount that sucker in there, and then get out the clothes hanger and the Pliers and wire that baby in there.

Hey, it's working on my exhaust on the ol' Wagon!

Naw, he didn't ave problems. Have you ever tried to break a mobo in half? They are tough! I did the physical limits experiment with a MediaGX board that finally (thank God) died. I grabbed it and expected to snap it like a graham cracker, but I ended up looking like Pee Wee Herman trying to rip the yellow pages. (Ok, it wasn't that hard, but they bend a lot before they break.)

So Big Doooog, didya have problems?
