Sudden Reboots

I've read several other posts about this subject, but none of them have fixed my system sadly, so I thought I'd bring it up again...

I just built this system, and after fighting to get it working (I'm still a novice at building from scratch so there was a good deal of trial and error), I got it running...

Once I got the system stable and everything was running fine with no errors I tried the Unreal Tournament 2k3 demo, as it was playing it just suddenly rebooted on me, and even after I've uninstalled the game my computer it continues the sudden reboots either when Windows is loading, or when, or shortly after a program is run...

The system is
Gigabyte Mother board G7VAXP
AMD Athlon XP 2000+
8 Gig HD Primary with an 80 gig and 30 gig slaved
ATI All In Wonder Radeon 8500 128MB video card
SoundBlaster Audigy sound card
Lite On 48x24x48 CDRW
512MB PC2700 RAM
250w power supply
WinXP Professional

Nothing is overclocked or anything of the sort, on the chance it was the heating I've removed both sides of my case, kept my room chilly, and put a box fan nearby to keep the air flowing... I read that there might not be enough power, so I unplugged the slaved hard drives, and USB things that weren't needed... I've run hardware diagnostics programs that have OK'ed my RAM, CPU, HD, and graphics card, I've updated all my drivers on everything, and downloaded all the updates from Microsoft...

Before I got my system "stable" before it was doing the same thing when I had missed some jumpers to adjust my clock speed on my motherboard to 133, I've also gone back in and to the best of my ability all the cable seem secure...

So if anyone has any other suggestions for me to try I'm more then willing ot test them out...

I forgot to mention, I turned off the WinXP "feature" to reboot instead of giving BSODs, and it still reboots, I never get an error... And occasionally after it does this it'll say "Windows can not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: ntoskrnl.exe" but if I turn it off for a few minutes and boot it up again then it will boot up normally...

Most often it reboots when I try to play a 3D game like HalfLife, or my system will hang up during gameplay if it doesn't shut down...

You need a higher output power supply. The recommended minimum is at least 300 watts. The AMD CPU's are power hungry and the fact that you're running 3 HDD's and a CDRW make the low wattage PSU more of a factor in the system crashes.

That and also, did you put anything between the HS and the processor?

::Shakes his fist:: And the person that I bought the motherboard and case from said "You just need 250, that'll handle anything on the market", the liar!

I only read your system specs and already saw my suspected problem, your PSU. You have 3 harddrives and an Athlon 2000+ on a 250w Power supply. At least goto a 350w or maybe even higher.

When buying Pouwer Supplies (PSUs) buy GOOD onlys, but flake out on a PSU. Buy Enermax or Antec, I'm sure others will reccommend other goos brands. I just bought a Antec 350w w/ dual silent Fans for $53 shipped from newegg.com. But like I said, you may need more then 350w.

Hope I helped.

The heatsink and fan were AMD approved..blah blah blah... It came with thermal grease on it, so I didn't put anything there myself... Normally it runs between 45-50C....

Why do computers reboot while playing 3d games like Half-Life( for me) and UT2K3 for Super Sloth, but doesn't when running high PCU prgrams like Seti or something?

Way too small on the PSU

With 3 hard drives and an XP2000 you should have a quality PSU (Antec, Enermax, etc) of at least 350W or more.
