| Installing Video Card Drivers on XP Pro
I have XP Professional and I want to update my video card drivers for my NVidia TNT2 32MB card. I downloaded the latest drivers from nvidia.com and during the installation it says "Setup has detected existing NVidia drivers on the system. It is recommended that you uninstall existing drivers before installing new ones"
When I go to the Device Manager and remove the Display Drivers, it asks me to reboot the system, so I do. When the system boots up, XP automatically re-installs the drivers it already has, which just defeats the purpose of removing them in the first place. My question is, how can i disable XP from automatically installing its drivers so i can have a chance to install my own updated drivers? Thanks |

You want to boot to safe mode and remove the old video drivers, that will fully remove them. Then you can install the new ones. |

ok, what i did instead is click on the video driver properties and did the "update driver" option and pointed it to the file that my driver update made. Now I have the latest drivers in and I still have the problem that led me to that in the first place. I'm having problems with my DVD-ROM and thought maybe my video card drivers were the source of the problem. please go to these links if you might be able to help me... http://www.techimo.com/forum/t45092.html http://www.techimo.com/forum/t46746.html |

I believe what you ought to do is install a standard PCI adapter. When you update the drivers in the "video driver properties", instead of trying to install the new drivers, install the Standard PCI VGA drivers. Then the install package will, I think, install your new drivers. But that's what they mean by unistall the drivers first - install standard VGA drivers. The machine can't run without any drivers; that's why it reinstalls the old ones when you reboot.
Also, most DVD-ROM or CD-ROM problems seem to be power supply related.
PS: I just read your other post about the DVD, PS isn't involved. You might be getting Anti-Virus interferance and a higher refresh rate straightens out many problems.

as i've posted on my DVD problems, i checked the monitor refresh rate and it only has one option of 60 hertz and the "hide modes that this monitor cannot display" box is checked. And I also do not have an anti-virus program on the computer right now... Thanks for trying to help, but i still havent found out how to fix my dvd-rom. One more thing... where can i get standard PCI VGA drivers? |

Just for the hell of it, I tried playing a DVD movie with the InterVideo WinDVD and it actually WORKS. I have no idea why it suddenly started working but then I tried to play the movie on Windows Media Player, and it still flickers or flashes... whatever on there. Now the question is, does anyone know why it would work just perfectly on one dvd player and still act up on WMP? |

Well, I don't have XP, but they should be on your XC disk. When you update the drivers, a wizard should appear. Click next. Then choose "Display all hardware". You should then be able to find your Standard VGA Adapter. If you screw up, keep experimenting with the wizard. It is used to up date all the hardware on the computer. |
