    X-server crash

    I have Linux Mandrake 9.0

I was installing a driver for my Lexmark printer. The system shutdown and upon reboot, I get a X server failed to load message. I also get a failure in /usr/bin/aumix.

The system boots into text mode. I need to know how to regain my Xserver and the other settings with out having to reload everything. Is a setting messed up, a way to check the files that are having problems and fix them?

What is the error, why is X crashing? Can you paste the output from when you load the X server?

Also check the Xfree86.log.0 log in /var/log

It fails to load on the start up when Linux is loading everything, it gets to loading Xserver and on the status it shows failed. The reason it gives is the file does not exist. I can't remember exactly how it is worded. i will have to go home and look tonite. I will try to access the log file as well.

Can you search through the x log file? The [EE] stuff in the log file would be a better post, in this case. Those look like the errors which even a successful X session can throw (I've seen these before and still been able to run X).

where would I need to look for the logs? Which directory. I am pretty inexperienced when it comes to the log files and such in Linux. Is there a general area the logs are ususally placed?

My bad...should have looked up a little further, already given.../var/log/

Looks like I will be reinsalling Linux...again

Now I can not even get it to boot into text mode, even using the boot disk. It gets as far as an error and entering read only mode, then just sits there.

Thanks for the help though. I appreciate all of your responses.
