SVCHOST is the indexing program used in winxp. you can turn it off by right clicking on your hard drive and unchecking use indexing service for faster searches. Do this for all you hard drives.

go to my computer > right click on hard drive > properties
then look at the window that popped up and click "Allow indexing service to index this drive". Then choose APPLY TO DRIVE, FILES AND SUBFOLDERS to take effect.

I can tell you don't. Go to Windows Update and download the SP1 Express and let it download it will take over 2 hours on 56k modem. I assume you have cable. Once installed you can select that and turn it off. oh.. Welcome to TechImo!
