jumper settings

Further to a previous post I have now had my hard drive replaced.
It is on primary ide channel one and the bios says it is the master.
The problem I have is adding my dvd rom. I want to set the dvd rom as the slave on the same ide channel as the hard drive. I have tried all the jumping seetings resulting in the following in the bios

The dvd or the hard drive is not recognised
The hard drive is recognised but not the dvd rom
The dvd rom is recognised nut not the hard drive.

If i take the dvd rom out of the equation the hard drive is recognised as the primadry master.

What am I doing wrong? Could I have the jumper wrong on the hard drive?

If so why is it recognising the hard drive as the primary master?

Things only go wrong when I try to get the dvd rom as the slave.

Can you setup the DVD drive as slave when running solo?

If it's a Western Digital drive there is a jumper setting for master (single drive system) and Master (with slave)
